When I first started working as an educational diagnostician in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I noticed a pattern that kept repeating itself. Teachers cared deeply about their students with IEPs and 504 Plans, but they were stretched thin. Many had caseloads of 50 or even 100 students. Despite their dedication, they simply could not address every goal with the attention it deserved. This was not because they lacked passion or skill. It was because time and systems were not on their side.
The Challenge Teachers Face Every Day
Imagine trying to support 50 students, each with unique learning needs and goals. Teachers want to help every child succeed, but the reality is overwhelming. They juggle lesson plans, meetings, paperwork, and direct instruction. When you add the responsibility of managing IEP goals for so many students, it becomes clear why some goals might not get the focused attention they need.
This is not a failure of educators. It is a system problem. Without a connected way to share information and coordinate support, teachers are left to work in isolation, doing their best but often falling short of what each student needs.
Families Investing in Tutoring That Misses the Mark
Parents want the best for their children. When school support feels stretched thin, many families turn to tutoring. But what I saw again and again was tutoring that became little more than homework help. Tutors helped students complete assignments, but the work rarely connected back to the IEP goals. Progress happened in the tutoring room, but it did not translate to growth in the classroom or on formal assessments.
This disconnect left families frustrated. They invested time, money, and hope into tutoring, only to wonder why their child’s progress seemed stuck. The tutoring sessions were helpful in the moment, but they were not part of a bigger, coordinated plan.
Tutors Struggling Behind the Scenes
Tutors are often the unsung heroes in this story. They spend hours outside of sessions planning lessons, documenting progress, and trying to communicate with families and schools. All this work is essential to provide targeted instruction, but it is rarely compensated.
Because of this, many tutors cannot afford to take on the students who need them most or to spend the time necessary to connect their work to the school’s goals. The system does not support tutors well, and that leaves students without the consistent, focused help they deserve.
Students Working Hard but Missing Confidence
I have met many students who work incredibly hard. They show up, try their best, and want to succeed. Yet, they often lack confidence. Why? Because the adults around them—teachers, tutors, and families—are not working from the same plan.
When everyone is pulling in different directions, students get mixed messages. They may feel like they are spinning their wheels or not making real progress. This confusion can chip away at their self-esteem and motivation.
What I Realized: The Missing Piece Was Connection
The problem was never a lack of passionate educators. Teachers, tutors, and families all want the best for students. The problem was that everyone was working hard but not from one connected system.
Without a shared plan and clear communication, efforts become fragmented. Goals get lost in translation. Progress stalls.
This realization led me to build AccommodatED Academy. I wanted to create a space where students, families, tutors, and schools could work together from one connected system. A place where tutoring is not just homework help but targeted instruction aligned with IEP goals. A place where teachers’ efforts are supported, tutors are valued, and students gain confidence through consistent, coordinated support.
